I'm thinking of heading to the Lake District for a few days hiking and wild camping. Just wondering if crampons and axe are necessary ??what are the current snow levels in the Lake District. Snow only in gullies??

Cheers Leon. Looks pretty clear on the summits of Scafell. Thanks

I did the Kentmere horseshoe yesterday, and there was an amazing amount of ice and hard neve, thought it had been very cold during the night. It's milder today but the old snow that remains is usually very hard. It depends where you are going, though I think I would be inclined to take at least an axe. Hope this helps

Depends what you're planning. I was there on Sunday and Monday and there was no significant old snow below 800m. However there was a fair bit on Bowfell/Great End/Scafell Pike. I didn't go up there as I didn't have my winter gear with me. It snowed down to 200m on Monday morning, but most of that is probably gone now. I suppose some of it could've melted then refrozen on the paths making progress awkward.
