Doubtless cavers used ice climbing techniques long ago although much of it would have been descents involving electron ladders etc. For instance I believe the sea diver Cousteau explored ice caves systems in the Gavarnie area of the Pyrenees.
Good point though....quality ice climbing throughout the year in predictable conditions with no precipitation!
