Lake District winter conditions

Summertime Blues winter first ascent was on the first day of English summertime in 1995. We are currently near the end of a winter that has not delivered our team one single winter's day climbing of value (what we call proper conditions) in the Lake District.

However, it has to be noted that winter 2013 and another recent winter did not end until June 1st. The April 2013 ice on the Trough was so brittle due to the intense cold that it was unclimbable, whereas it had been climbable two weeks previously.

With two weeks to the equinox, unless we get a serious cold push, it will be rock-climbing only. At least we have managed to rock climb throughout the winter.

I agree, winter ain't over till its over. In 2013 I can remember climbing Percy's Passage on Coniston Old Man in full winter garb on something like 8/April, about a week into Summertime, after work & without a torch topping out about 9PM.
