Was told that a solo climb was made on point five on the Ben this year.
Can some one tell me if this is right and give me a name.
 Goucho 30 Jan 2013
In reply to everest1958: That is indeed correct.

His name is Charlton Chestwig.

In reply to Goucho: that must make him the worlds finest climber?

In reply to everest1958: 3rd Jan Ivor biggun

In reply to Goucho:

Wasn't it Fredrick Arthur-Bob?
 ablackett 30 Jan 2013
In reply to everest1958: I believe what all the responses are saying is that this probably has happened and probably isn't that unusual. I might be wrong though as i'm no expert, Ivor Bigun might have got up it. I big pair would be handy.

It's not unusual to see the Point soloed in good conditions, but these are more likely to be found mid or late-season. It's barely been in condition so far this season, so I'd be surprised if anyone had strapped one on and gone for the solo.

Is it not technically a solo anyway and no one wants to admit it?

No, by using axes and crampons it's technically aiding, the clean FA is still there (get sharpening those finger and toe nails!)

Where does stepcutting fit in the spectrum between a modern-style ascent and a naked barefoot solo?

In reply to Only a hill:

I think the type of ascent Smith/Marshall did (not the FA) is probably as far away from aid climbing as is possible on this route!

I think that should be considered on the same level as chipping, and therefore highly unethical :p

Thank for your reply.

No idea what you mean by that.

I'm not sure it has that reputation anyway.

In reply to Milesy: pointless maybe but point five has some pretty solid fixed stuff as I remember. If that's covered you will get some screws in.

Protection is fine on Point Five - no worse than any other big grade V and better than many.
