Little and Big: Hawk and Harpy Gear News

© Ocun

There are situations in climbing that border with danger and ask for special protection. To increase your courage in such moments, Ocún has designed its smallest locking carabiner named Hawk. And then there are situations when you struggle with the logistic challenges of chaotic belay points when climbing bigwalls. To help you win over the chaos, Ocún has designed its biggest HMS biner named Harpy.

The Hawk Screw (RRP £8.99) is the smallest locking carabiner from Ocún. The compact shape, low weight and screw lock make it ideal for use for lead climbing and mentally demanding routes.

The Hawk is an asymmetrical D carabiner. The alignment of the main axis is typical of carabiners designed for lead climbing, both with quickdraws and in combination with loops, wedges and spring-loaded camming devices. The Hawk is prized because of its light I profile, which reduces weight while retaining strength.

In its class the Hawk Screw can be considered a premium secure carabiner. Key parameters and safety features include:

  • Strength along longitudinal axis 24 kN
  • Strength along transverse axis 9 kN
  • Strength with open gate 9 kN
  • Keylock type gate
  • Safety decal on gate to verify locked position
  • Weight 42 g

Sometimes you need to take special measures to ensure your safety when climbing – for example using a screw lock carabiner instead of a quickdraw... when you feel like being daring. That's why we've designed the Hawk Screw.

Harpy Screw is a large and solid HMS. HMS carabiners are climber's best friend. They are pear-shaped and therefore perfect for belaying in combination with the belay device as well as with a Munter Hitch knot.

The Harpy is our largest HMS carabiner. Apart from belaying, it is especially suitable for setting up complicated belay stations in bigwalls and mountains. It is characterized by (názorně předvádět):

  • high strength
  • superior gate clearance
  • ergonomic design to fit comfortably in your hand
  • and very spacious arched basket with plenty of room to organize other equipment and loops

The wide range of their usability makes HMS carabiners the essential pieces of climbing equipment. When a beginner buys his first carabiner, he will certainly get an HMS. And when an advanced climber is getting gear for his first bigwall, he should go with the Harpy. Because it combines great versatility and lightness.

We produce Harpy in three variants:

Screw (RRP £13.99) is the one with classic screw gate for easiest handling. You will appreciate it in winter and difficult conditions.

Twist (RRP £14.99) is equipped with a twist-type safety gate that automatically returns to locked position. It increases your safety while it is still easily manageable with one hand only.

To open the super safe Triple (RRP £15.99) safety gate, you have to slide and then rotate the gate. There is absolutely no way it can open by itself, which makes it a good choice for beginners and safety seekers alike.

So whichever version of Harpy you choose, you can be sure to get light, ergonomic carabiner with remarkably spacious upper arch. A carabiner that you will probably use every time you climb.
