Vertebrate Publishing titles make up three of the six books on this year's shortlist for the prestigious Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature.

Art of Freedom by Bernadette McDonald, The Magician's Glass by Ed Douglas and Days to Remember by Rob Collister have been selected from a total of thirty-five submissions for this year's prize.

Established in 1983, the Boardman Tasker Award commemorates the lives of Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker – outstanding mountaineers and accomplished authors – who disappeared together high on Everest in 1982. The £3,000 prize is presented annually to the author or co-authors of an original work that has made an outstanding contribution to mountain literature.

Vertebrate's Managing Director Jon Barton commented, 'Our mission is to seek out and publish the best mountain writing, and for our books to comprise half of this year's Boardman Tasker shortlist suggests we're doing something right. Mountain literature as a genre is going from strength to strength, and writing like Bernadette's, Ed's and Rob's will surely stand the test of time.'

The Magician's Glass is a collection of eight climbing essays on climbing life and culture; Art of Freedom is a profile of Polish alpinist Voytek Kurtyka, one of the climbing world's most enigmatic figures; and Days to Remember is a collection of tales from a well-known and highly respected British mountain guide. The three titles, which complete the shortlist, are The Push by American climber Tommy Caldwell (Michael Joseph, Penguin Random House), Night Naked by Erhard Loretan and Jean Ammann (Mountaineers Books), and Among the Summer Snows by Christopher Nicholson (September Publishing).

This is the eighth year Vertebrate titles have made the Boardman Tasker Award shortlist, and Vertebrate titles have won the prize on three occasions: Ron Fawcett's Rock Athlete in 2010, Andy Kirkpatrick's Cold Wars in 2012, and, in 2016, The Bond by Simon McCartney.

The winner will be announced at the Boardman Tasker Award presentation on Friday 17 November 2017 at the Kendal Mountain Festival.
