Boreal Saurus Running Shoe Gear News

Saurus is an all new trail running shoe which excels on off-road footpaths and routes which feature a mix of hard paved surfaces and softer off-road terrain.

There's plenty of underfoot cushioning to soak up the miles on hard surfaces thanks to dual density EVA layers in the sole unit and a plush Ortholite footbed . You'll also find excellent grip on soft and loose surfaces too thanks to Vibram T-trail outsole which features well-spaced lugs and sticky MEGAGRIP rubber.

A 15mm stack height at the forefoot and 25mm at the heel makes for a great balance between cushioning and stability. The resulting 10mm drop combined with the pronounced 'rolled' shape to the heel area makes for a highly efficient and smooth ride that's ideal for distance trail running.

The synthetic mesh and microfiber uppers have been designed for low weight whilst retaining rugged durability. Keen eyes may notice that the flex point is constructed from a panel of the special ultra-tough polyamide textile normally used on mountaineering boots thus providing maximum durability in this key wear zone.

Inside, the PU AirNet lining ensures great comfort and breathability and the one-piece integrated tongue design gives this shoe a superb smooth and sock-like, foot-wrapping fit. At the rear an external TPU 'cradle' provides welcome added stability to the heel fit.

The outsole features the innovative and patented ITR (Integrated Toe Rand) construction in which the outsole and toe-cap are made in one piece without any glued join, thereby completely eliminating the all too common problem of the toe cap coming unglued over time.

I wore a pair of these just last week during a climbing expedition in Oman. While I took them mainly because they're pretty light and would be nice and comfy to relax in after climbing, I also knew that I'd be wanting to run in them when not on the wall, and so it proved. Not associating Boreal with running shoes, I wasn't expecting any great performance but they turned out to be excellent, certainly rivalling the performance of the more mainstream brand trail shoes I usually use at home. They're not the lightest but they are extremely comfy and supportive on stony ground, so perhaps better for the rougher ground than for park runs. One feature that was new to me was the bobbly insole, which felt really weird at first, but remarkably quickly I got used to it, and it may have turned out partly responsible for my not having felt the heat too much while running, despite the high temperatures.

All in all, definitely worth considering.
