Last winter Petzl brought out a revamped range of technical axes. We covered the NOMIC and ERGONOMIC back in March, but a broken leg put our review of the updated QUARK on hold. So here it is...
Climbing Technology have some great new products along the usual classics in their range for winter 2017 / 2018. Highlights include a new technical axe and crampon, improvements to the popular Ice Traction Crampons and a great looking new shovel too.
A new technical axe from CT for this winter. The North Couloir is a fully modular tool designed for ice climbing and technical alpinism. Both an Ice and Mixte pick are available and can be interchanged depending on the type of climbing. The adze and hammer can be removed and are also available as spares.

Another new axe for winter 2017 / 2018, the Dron Plus is aimed at all round technical mountaineering. It's capable enough to be used on easy north face routes yet versatile enough for technical ridges and easy mixed climbs too. The Dron Plus comes supplied with the classic Drag Tour leash and the Bumper hand support (not included but available as an extra) can be added to increase usability on steep ground.

CT's most popular walking axes, the Alpin Tour and Alpin Tour Plus are ideal for UK hillwalking, easy mountaineering and glacier travel. Both have a hardened steel head and light alloy shaft with a slight curve for easier plunging. The Alpin Tour Plus has an added rubber grip on the shaft. Available in 50cm, 60cm and 70cm lengths.

Brilliant new modular technical crampons from CT. The Hyper-Spike are supplied with the HOOK mono point but feature multiple front point options and configurations depending on the type of climbing. The BLADE mono point can be fixed next to the main mono for greater precision and lateral engagement on small edges. The EAGLE accessory point is a flat, curved point designed for mixed terrain with a lot of snow on. The Hyper-Spikes can also be configured with 2 HOOK points for classic icefal climbing and mountaineering.

The Nuptse Evos have gained a great reputation over the past few years for being a solid and reliable performer. They are available with 3 different versions - the classic, semi automatic and automatic. This year a flex version with a more flexible central bar is also in the range.

The Ice Traction Crampons have been updated this year with new stainless steel points and chains for a more durable finish. They are available in 4 sizes and have a very secure fitting system that consists of the rubber rand and additional top velcro strap.

The Snow Blade is an aluminum shovel for ski touring and mountaineering. Featuring an ergonomic handle for ease of use and improved digging efficiency. Ribbing increases rigidity and holes enable the shovel to be used as a snow anchor. The Snow Blade comes in two versions; one has a fixed removable handle and the other a removable telescopic handle.
