Overview

The Rucksack Club is a group of like-minded individuals from all walks of life who share a common interest in adventure in the mountains. We number around 400 and are based mainly in the North West of England – although we have members spread throughout the globe. Additionally, we have a very active London section. We encourage prospective members who are enthusiastic and self-reliant in the hills, and enjoy all aspects of the club’s activities.

See www.rucksackclub.org for more information and www.blog.rucksackclub.org to get an idea of the kind of things we get up to.

Our Meets Programme is at the heart of the clubs activities. We have 50+ outdoor meets a year which vary enormously from general mountaineering, climbing, fell running, Alpine meets, winter climbing, mountain biking, caving and skiing. The programme varies greatly from year to year – only limited by our members imagination – but retains many firm favourites such as Summer and Winter Alpine Meets; Gogarth climbing; the Islands meet; Scottish Winter climbing; SunRock and many, many more.

In addition to the outdoor meet programme, we have weekly evening climbing meets during the summer months and indoor wall meets through the winter. We have regular indoor lectures with excellent invited speakers. We have mid-week walks from our Wednesday Walkers group and a full programme of meets from our London Section

As well as the web-site, we keep in touch with a light-hearted quarterly publication of meet details, news and reports. We also publish an excellent full-colour annual Journal which documents the outstanding activities of the club.

The Club owns three excellent and strategically placed mountaineering huts: Beudy Mawr at the heart of the Llanberis Pass, High Moss in the Duddon Valley at the foot of the Walna Scar track over to Coniston, and Craigallan looking out over Loch Linnhe within easy reach of Glencoe and The Ben. Each has its own special character and is available for the use of Club Members.

We have strong links with the other leading British Mountaineering clubs and also the BMC.

The Rucksack Club was founded in 1902 and has been at the forefront of developing climbing in the UK and beyond. Please take a look at the History Pages on our companion site to understand our rich heritage.
