Overview

About those "mug stains" well that is funny but they really are just fluorescent paint that can only be seen when the dark lights are on at night ;)

This running of this wall has recently changed hands. New routes are going up and, as far as I know, all the regular, friendly staff are being kept. There are now "official" grades for all the climbs posted on the walls. There are also extra mats on the bouldering bit downstairs. As of my last visit, the route-setting was not complete: easy stuff was already up. Harder stuff was only a promise.

Tad (another instructor who you haven't seem to have mentioned) just put up 5 new routes on the upstairs featured walls. 2 blue routes (ones a 5b the other i dont remember) a green (a 5? i dont remember), and two really easy ones a red and a grey. The old red one had some nice bridging, the new one has a bit. Also a new pink one was put up a while ago with an overhang! I usually climb 3 times a week in the 11-15 (not 10-17) sessions.

I didn't mind the (lack of) grading, because on the 17th of December the wall was so blooming cold that none of that really mattered. It's open to wind from the outside (even thought it's under a roof). Needles to say there were no crowds.

In (belated) answer to Pino, the grades range from French 4 up to French 6c+. A coulpe of routes may be into the 7's but I'm not that good. They are in the process of grading the routes at the moment. If you go there on a club night the friendly instructors will be able to point out to you which are easier and harder climbs, before you attempt them and mess yourself up. They haven't changed any of the routes since I started going there a year ago! Although new ones do get added (very) occasionally.

It is nice little climbing wall and does indeed have a good atmosphere. Although the club nights can be pretty busy and make it hard to get on the big wall. Only negative comment I'd make is that they don't grade any of the climbs, which is annoying. Not sure how often they change the climbs around either. Seem to get more spinners here than other places which suggests to me they don't do it that often. But in general a nice friendly place to climb. And a good spot to get when quiet. Have to agree with the reception report though - they don't have a clue. Keep losing my paper work!

don't really understand the routing system on these walls. some more labelling would be nice, as I'm never sure whether I can't do a route because it's really hard, or because I'm just shite! Still, nice place, cheap and v. convenient.

You must go with a partner if you are not going to the climbing club as virtualy all the climbing is rope work and the landing is bad if you are bouldering except in the boulder cave.
