99m, 5 pitches.

Rockfax Description
One of the finest mountain routes in the UK, The Gambit Climb has it all. Acres of exposure, superb moves, great rock and a crux at the end. What more could you ask for? The start of the route lies 5m left of a unique pocketed wall, around 60m right of Western Gully.
1) 23m. Climb a crack past a hanging flake for 3m and then move left. Move down and left to gain a slab at its left edge. Follow this slab to a corner-crack. Climb this to gain a ledge, then follow a continuation crack above to reach large ledges.
2) 17m. The line of least resistance leads up via a chimney to reach a large grassy ledge known as The Green Collar.
3) 15m. Traverse right to gain a short chimney. Climb this to the next ledge.
4) 15m. Move left along the ledge to the base of a chimney. Follow this to gain the top of the pinnacle on the left. Step right and follow the crack above to more ledges.
5) 15m. Above is a rightward-sloping ledge that is followed to a square-cut corner. Climb this with difficulty via a thin crack to gain easy ground. © Rockfax

UKC Logbook Description
A very varied route on soud rock: an absolute classic!
Llanberis's answer to Grooved Arete! Start at the foot of a 10ft/3m flake crack, 55yd/53mR or Western Gully and 15ft/5m L of a pocketed wall.
1. 75ft/23m. Climb the short flake until a step L, then down, lead to a traverse across a slab into a deep corner crack. Go up this to a good ledge. Continue up a short awkward crack to a large stance.
2. 55ft/17m. Traverse R to a shallow chimney and climb it to a grassy ledge.
3. 45ft/14m. A difficult traverse R leads to a short chimney which is taken to a good ledge.
4. 70ft/21m. Ascend the chimney at the back of the ledge to the top of the pinnacle. Hand traverse into an easy corner crack which leads to a scree-covered ledge - an excellent pitch.
5. 80ft/24m. Move R up a sloing grassy ledge to a R-angled corner with a thin crack. Climb this strnuously to the top.

mattdennies 21 Jun AltLd O/S Genuinely is a top 50 route for a change. Clean rock, interesting and varied moves, little bit of technical climbing at the end, plenty of gear, and very little scrambling up grassy ledges for a welsh severe. The strenuous walk in and descent was worth it.

Steve Banham 1 Sep, 2018 Lead O/S First climb since Parsons nose, 2 years ago. Completed with rucksacks and climbing shoes, in mostly dry conditions. Route finding is easy once you're on the right ledges P1. Tricky - I may have been too far right. I climbed directly towards the big hanging flakey slab. P2. Short easy pitch, up broken ground. maybe Diff P3. From the ledge, climb diagonally right from the ledge, using small holds on shelf. Step across, with feet on the alcove. Easy ground following groove up and back to the left. Long ledge is belay ledge. 3 moves of Severe P4. Climb straight up chimney, stepping onto ledge ontop of block to the left, but then step back right into the chimney. don't continue left above the block. Chockstone in back of chimney near top. Climb over ledge to second large ledge at the foot of the broken ground. Severe P5. Continue up sloping slab to the right (15-20degree). at the head, turn left and go up the RHS of the square cornered chimney. Corner is hard, or you can climb onto a smaller block to the left and cut back to the right. Thug up crack in corner using right foot jams. Severe (hard) Topout onto Person Arete (Scramble) .

dan_waterston 13 Aug, 2017 Lead O/S Great route & conditions. Slightly damp in places. First pitch a bit bold/ delicate across slab when not warmed up. Second pitch can be pretty much combined with this (which led to some momentary route confusion). Third (4th as written) is the highlight- fairly easy, but bold, move across from pinnacle. Less keen on the final pitch (due to some crumbly rock), although 'crux' move is not that bad really, but does require some upper body strength. Closely following Dave & Alison up (so TBF knew how the climb went, and so perhaps not quite 'on sight')

2602steve ?Jul, 2017 Lead Excellent climb but overall feels much harder than severe. Yesterday we did Ampitheatre Buttress - at VD only 1 grade lower ????? no way. AB is a stroll. Gambit top pitch is defo 4c, the first pitch is less technical than it looks but with the wet mossy start is prob 4a; overall you'd have to give this a solid HS. Fantastic setting, interesting varied rock, good stances all. If u leave bags at the bottom I'd recommend scrambling down to western gully, maybe with a safety line, rather than walking up and out as it's a very long way round

rachelpearce01 6 Oct, 2016 Lead dnf Well.... Set off at a great pace, making easy work of the approach. Bossed the hour walk in eta by 3 mins YO, with a bit off female faffing too. Reached the crag, found the line, visualised the route, mentally I had done it, so it didnt really matter about what happened next. I racked up, keen to take the first pitch while I was still relatively warm and psyched. What I havent mentioned yet is that it was pretty windy and chilly. scrambled up to where my boots could touch rock rather than mossy slippery covered rocks, this was pretty extreme in itself. and then my super psyche came to dramatic holt when i found that it was all feeling a bit precarious and slippery and I couldnt actually feel the rock due to my hands being too numb. So I pussied out, down climbed sketchily, and gave the rack to charlie. He racked up, with a little less pscyhe, and started up. Got to the same bit as me, his hands also numb with cold, and made a good executive decision that if we were struggling now, and only 5 hours left of light then best to call it a day. so we went up the north ridge and crib goch and then down the pyg. so not a complete waste of a day. the second time this week for them too that this climb has had the better of them. gambit wasnt meant to be for 2016.

Did the fun scramble beside the stream to get up to the crag and climbed with sacks, Rob and Trevor following. A lovely route once we got started. I lead P1,3,5 and thought the last pitch was the crux with the initial corner moves seeming like 4c. P1 was really fun. We did have a false start, trying to go up the very steep flake crack to the right (i.e. right next to the pock-marked wall) for 20 mins having not read the description in enough detail ! We said that seemed far too hard for a S and it was. Nearly fell off downclimbing it ! Descended by going up and over Crib y Ddysgl and down the Pyg Track to PyP, from where Rob ran back down to get the car from the Cromlech boulder parking - what a star !

Stanners 25 Jul, 2015 Lead O/S After bumping into another group about to set off on Main Wall we pressed on to this. Bit of a trek! Brilliant positions and moves for a VD! Once the hands had fully numbed it wasn't too unpleasant in the shade. A very good journey, but initially got a bit lost going down the wrong gully on the descent. Walk down to the car in the sun bathing in the mountain streams was equally as nice.
