Rockfax Description
A great alternative if you are up to it though, as the grade suggests, it is delicate and bold with virtually no gear. Climb the scoop until it steepens then balance out right to gain and climb the slab. Finish up the original or solo right to Ordinary Route. © Rockfax

badgerjockey 25 Aug Lead O/S Superb start to a great route. Ignore the book and the Paul Sagar character in the comments, if you can't find two good small nut placements in the first 10m you are blind. Thereafter there is spaced but adequate protection. Would be squeaky bum in the drizzle though. Lovely climbing all the way. I'd give this start HVS 5a. The final 4b pitch was a bit more run out and thin/polished that expected! Magnificent setting.

Paul Sagar 25 Mar Lead O/S Flippin’ Heck. The guidebook does say that the gear is “virtually nonexistent”. Even more helpful would be: “there is no gear at all until an OK brass micro at 25 meters”. Literally thought to myself “if I fall here i’ll die...so don’t fall”, before committing to the crux slab move. Didn’t bother putting gear in on the easy pitches above because didn’t seem worth it after this. P.S. loving some of the ridiculous sandbagging comments below. “There’s loads of gear if you have skyhooks and tricams”. Yeah cos your average HVS leader at the Idwal Slabs comes sporting skyhooks and tricams. Some people really are just dickheads. Basically if you’re not comfortable soloing a 25 meter slab with real climbing moves on it (and yes, 4C at 20 meters up is real climbing moves) then don’t do this route.

Dan Radford 6 Jun, 2018 Lead O/S This is a head game climb. Easy moves but essentially a free solo until you get around onto the proper slab after 15m-20m or so. You could probably get a small cam or tricam in one of the pockets earlier (HVS if so) but had neither (so E1) and didn't want to hang around fiddling with nuts that probably wouldn't hold. Sorry to Coggo who had to watch the run out on this one. Spicey but probably wouldn't recommend.

JoeFoster59 31 May, 2017 AltLd O/S Cool way to do this classic. First party on it and glad we were as we got great weather with no crowds. I ran up the direct to the belay a bit sparse on pro but easy climbing. Eric lead the next two pitches in one even though its pretty much a scramble to the base of the final rock tower. Which I got. Overall lovely climbing linking pitches you can move quite quick up it.
