Ticklists: Aid climbing.

Fantastic fun, incredibly memorable, especially since we didn't really have sufficient equipment for this kind of aiding. (A couple of slings is all you need right?) Traversing the bolts was pretty straight forward, but the overhang poses some difficulty. Climbing beyond the overhang feels like a high VS 4c. The fun came when my second tried to come up. First he came off the slab below the overhang, he rightly decided to prusik back to the runner, although this was slow progress as I initially slowly fed him slack thinking he might be try to traverse back right (stupid?) He then traversed all the way to the lip of the overhang, where he was unable to get over the it. Some time passed on my end before finally, in a gap in the traffic, I managed to shout down "are you ok?" "No." From the belay, I couldn't see or hear him, although I suspected I may be able to get better contact from further to the left. I escaped the belay and traversed left where I could see he was hanging belay the overhang. Unable to get further we agreed I would lower him to the slab below, he would traverse back to the belay, clip himself in, untie, and I would abseil back down the route (off an iron spike), retrieve the gear and then we could escape the route elsewhere. Fun day out, a bit stressful for my second though I imagine. My advice: - if you don't have proper aid gear, bring many slings (4/5 each) and some prusiks - remember you cannot hear your second from the belay, so establish a plan of actions early, maybe both of you have a phone on you - do this with an experienced second!
