275m. The easiest of the major Nevis ridges (after ledge route) but still makes a very fine mountaineering expedition. Beware of avalanches from the castle area above, otherwise it is possible in most conditions. Traverse right onto the ridge from below the castle gullies and scramble up it via easy walls and slabs. At the steepening, climb a steep groove to a ledge and then traverse right in a spectacular position. From a niche, a very exposed chimney on good flakey holds leads to a ledge and belay. Another steep pitch leads to an easing in the ridge, and easier ground leads to the top.
In good conditions an excellent descent is to ascend to the north summit of Carn Dearg and descend ledge route. If descending via the halfway Lochan, traverse the hillside west from the top of the ridge for 300m to avoid the north face of Carn Dearg.

Karlos 13 Mar Lead rpt Due to avalanche risk, approached the ridge from further right, below face of Cairn Deag. Followed other teams for this part, but conditions terrible, about 3 pitches on very soggy snow, therefore ate into our time. Once finally on the ridge proper, could move together, and progress faster, although still fresh snow. Pitched chimney section, which felt steeper than on previous ascents, but lots of hooks. Another pitch above then walked together, enjoying exposure and occasional views. Contoured off at first then followed steep icey (slight risk) slopes directly downhill to Red Burn path.

PilarMartinez 1 Apr, 2018 AltLd What a day we had!! after lots of faffing at the beginning and starting a bit late, lucky the days are long. Great Ridge but lots of sugary snow what make some bits quite hard or maybe was the fact that the day before we had a 12 hour day on the Ben too, so two day in a row were Knackering. We descended right to the lake by Halfway Lonchan what involved lots of down climbing on easy ground but exhausting and it was looooong :-(

alexm198 31 Mar, 2018 Solo O/S The beginning of a big day enchaining the five Nevis ridges. Left the tent at 5am, catapulted up towards Castle Ridge by some excellent coffee. Good snow conditions underfoot, lovely moves through the very exposed crux chimney. Felt very alpine. Think we took about 45 mins for the route, followed by a long slog to the summit in a whiteout.

Karlos 6 Apr, 2015 Lead Ridge looked black from beneath, but lots of sopping wet snow on all of the ledges. Some of the corners were more difficult, since no longer banked out but not dry either, and ice remnants on some of the slabs. Watched The Shroud fall apart, with large avalanche causing some ice blocks to bounce all of the way into the approach gully - TAKE CARE. Mostly clear skies, but did clag over towards the end, and we made of mistake of trying to descend too early. Retreated, and headed up and over to the zig zags - much faster even with detour.

Retreated, and headed up and over to the zig zags - much faster even with detour.

bazilikiukas 29 Mar, 2015 Solo dnf Woof, one of the most extreme days of our lives so far. Mary and me thought the route was easier than it actually was. We managed to solo 2/5 of the route probably. At one point we got stuck, cos the route got too steep and I tried to lead it, but didn't manage to pas one move, so we decided to just sit and wait for the boys to appear at the top and throw us the rope. An hour later, nothing.. I then decided to try and lead it again, this time I took a crampon off to help me pass the move. It was very scary as a lot of rock and its features were covered with snow or thin ice. I managed to get up that pitch and Mary came after me. On top we realised that the climbs ahead were too hard for us. We called the boys to ask when they are coming and turned out that they were having trouble on the Castle Ridge and they had started retreating. Our hopes shattered. We told them we were stuck and we'd try to abseil down. We did that and at the bottom of that pitch the rope got stuck. So I climbed back up again to untangle it and by then the Mountain rescue were trying to contact us. We communicated back and forth for a bit less than an hour and just before 8pm a helicopter came to pick us up. It was boys that called them as they were extremely worried about us. So after a 14 hour day, me and Maria were safe and warm in Lochaber mountain rescue place in Fort William. So many different emotions that day :)
