Did in 8 pitches, lead 5-8, needle crack was superb! All styles of climbing in a fantastic location, still cheesing enough at summit that waiting 3.5hrs for buddies to finish was still enjoyable, so worth it.

A lot of teams seem to end up on the top pitches of Steeple (very good but a bit harder finish). Some guides including 1984 SMT suggest going left to slabby ramp - I think that will get you to Steeple. To stay on Needle, go a fair way right after P4. Leaning out from the belay ledge you can see the worn pink granite flake crack of the "crack for thin fingers" a short way off diagonally up right. P2 is the key pitch for me - not the most physical but quite long and delicate with routefinding and slightly harder to get good gear.

with noskki
MrRiley 26/May AltLd O/S

One of the best routes I've ever done! More sustained than I thought as even the 'easy' pitches have some good/bold climbing. P2 is bold for a section but the two tricky bits have some gear, P4 is well protected but hard right off the belay as you curve up left, before amazing flake climbing and an airy traverse lead to a burly bulge. Crack for thin fingers is short and bouldery and would be very hard indeed with chubby digits. The Needle Crack is insane and was surprisingly wet - an incredible lead by Andy. 6.5 hours to the top of the difficulties. Full write up here:

This was a cold day! Credit to Rick and Hugh for getting me up this, I only led the pitch up to the Needle crack - had a go at it, but came down as I wasn't too happy with the damp slime in places. Great climbing throughout, particularly the 5b pitch 4 (with the leftwards traverse along the ledge) and the Needle crack. Topped out just in time to get some sun, what a day!

with Hugh Simons, Richard
Hugh Simons 02/Oct/16 AltLd O/S

1st pitch was wet so had to take an alternative line up right, which involved some pretty tenuous climbing on some big run-outs on new ground! Ended up getting to the ledge in 2 pitches because of this. Annoyed to have missed the proper line, but the 2nd pitch up to the ledge was still 5b above a questionable shallow spike runner - exciting! I lead P1+2, Richard P4,5,6, Euan P7, and me P8+9. Pitch 4 (5b) was great, the Needle corner pitch (P8) was one of the best pitches I've lead in the mountains. Such a good setting. It was quite damp and slimy in places which made it extra rewarding! Topped out to a beautiful sunset, amazing day.

A great day out stolen from the autumn, we'll have to come back for the proper finish! Blaeberries on every belay! Optimistically set off in dark from ski centre! It didn't seem to have rained much lately but no one seemed to have told the dripping cracks that. Heavy dark grey sky & cold rock all day! Micro cams handy. Quite a lot of pegs and stuck nuts/cams in this route, perhaps 20 for whole route, most in not great condition, cracked pegs/ dodgy old nuts etc, none I think essential. In pitch 2, the cracks are mostly rather shallow and open so whilst there a good number of holds, don't saunter past good gear placements, there are just enough. (The only fixed gear in that pitch is an uninspiring micronut under the final overhang). Also on pitch 2 so long as your ropes are 50m then carry on to the ledge for a comfy belay rather than belaying semi-hanging a few metres below. Too blindly following some old chalk traces we carried on straight up and arrived at the foot of the Steeple corner. Phew, managed it free, just! Reading others' comments, this seems to be a pretty common error and gives a good route always on reasonably sound rock and gear but if you want to keep to Needle, stay right after pitch 4, the first 5b pitch.

Thing is though all the other pitches are fantastic P2 (5b), P4 (5b), Crack for thin fingers (5a) are brilliant too. Hardest physical pitch is P2 but The Crack for Thin Fingers has a hard crux and save some in the tank for the Needle Crack. 4****

climbed 3 times now and one of my favourite routes in britain. The needle crack at the top is wonderful and fairly easy. I think this is low in the grade E1 and a must do!

I got the crack for thin fingers. Toby threaded the Needle. Note to self - sandbag someone else with the crack next time.

Perfection - especially for a team of 'different' abilities! Leading all the odd pitches meant nothing harder than 4b. P2 definitely very solid E1, needs confidence and the right line... P4 easier but still needed a good sunbathe on the fine ledge at end of P5 to settle down. Loved P7 forging upward to the chimney. V grateful Rob showed how to bridge the chimney. To Rob's disgust, threading the eye just didn't appeal so led the wall alongside - will have to go back. Mr T & Hewie followed us: Rich's classic quote arriving chastened at the top - "I need to go back to climbing Severes with girls".

Probably the best mountaineering day out I've had in British hills.
