The Val de Izas is on the Spanish side of the Col de Somport in the Western Pyrenees. It is just to the east of Canfranc Estacion and provides a good number of reliable winter climbs, mostly on water ice. Access is relatively easy, many routes have bolted belays, but the whole side of the valley where most of the climbs are, (including descent paths,)can be prone to avalanche. L'Histoire de L'eau L'eau looks stunning - 300m Scottish iv/ 80 and 90 degree ice. Check out www.infohielo.com for Spanish ice conditions. Normally in condition from end Jan - end March.
Driving north out of Canfranc Estacion the last building on the right, a bakery, has a small car park. The path leads North East to a col with a ruined castle, from where the main path heads up the valley. Climbs are reached after 1.5 hrs. Most routes are on the right hand (north facing)side. There is a free hut at the top of the valley, and a bivouac boulder beneath L'eau Leau.
