Crag features

Perched high up on the slopes, and tucked neatly under a radio tower, is the spectacular tufa-laced wall of The Lost World. This amazing cave gives some spectacular long routes weaving between huge stalactites and tufas mostly requiring stamina and power for success. There are a few slightly easier routes on the vertical right-hand side but it is mostly mid-7 routes and upwards here.

The remote location and slightly difficult access ensure that it is rarely busy although it has been known to get busy on occasional weekends. Some of the climbs are very young and still need more traffic to establish the lines and clean the rock. There is plenty of scope for further development. Be mindful that stalactites can break and fall so a helmet is advisable when belaying.

Approach notes

From the central cross road junction in Macari, go west up hill (signed to some B&Bs) to the road end. Continue up the concrete track steeply up the hill - rough and narrow and may not be suitable for some vehicles. After around 700m, where the road turns sharply right (flat area on the left for 3 or 4 cars if further progress is difficult). Continue driving (or walking) all the way to the top where there is parking for 2 or 3 cars by the radio tower. Do not block access to the tower itself. From the parking, walk northwest along the wide plateau which narrows to a point (the path is vague). A fixed rope leads steeply down although many will prefer to abseil from bolts. The descent is approximately 20m and feels very exposed so, if you can, leave a rope in place for your return. There are two more abseil points along the cliff but these are a bit hair-raising and unpleasant with heavy rucksacks. Once down, navigate carefully along the base of the wall following cairns to the first routes to the left of the shallow cave.
