Mount Ararat (5137m) is the highest peak of Turkey. It is located at the "Kurdish triangle", at the boarder between Turkey, Iran and Armenia. The mountain has extraordinal historical and mythological meaning in the region. Currently, the summit is under military control, so special permit from the Turkish Mountain Federation and the Turkish Military Service is necessary. Quite recent (2010 - 2012) were the so called open international invitations for climbing Mt. Ararat, where official permit was secured for each member of this inciatives. All activities were escorted by representatives of the Turkish Military Service. The now-a-day regulation for international climbers is uncertain.
Approach notes
The approach may start from either Igdir or Dogubayazit. Driving is possible to approximately 2200m on a dirty (gravel) road. There are four popular routes for reaching the summit: North-West (Gundogan Koyu), North-East (Gundogan Koyu, Haydar Dagi Yaylasi), East (Serdarbulak Yaylasi), South (Topcatan or Cetilik Koyu).
