Crag features

At first sight this looks like a large erratic boulder sitting next to the Craigmaddie burn, however it is in fact a section of ?sandstone? bedrock that's collapsed due to erosion.

The rear of the block is overhanging and there are serveral other smaller blocs behind it, however they are all very mossy and unclimbable in their present state.

The area is very marshy and soft

The main bloc has a few different options but needs a lot of cleaning to be in condition. It is currently unclimbable.

Main routes would be up the arete from the rear (with obvious 'steps' to start) or the end of the bloc nearest the river, or possibly the furthest end from the river.

Discovered and developed by Al Gorham and co, then left to the moss...

Approach notes

Park at The Loch Ardinning Nature Reserve parking on the A81 between Milngavie and Strathblane (55.971494, 4.303127) and follow the nature reserve walk, going past the small outcrop and keeping right along the north end of the loch. When you reach the style go over it and out into the open moorland. Follow the muddy path till you reach a wooden boardwalk over a small stream. Continue to follow the path until you see the bloc on your right as you start to rise up the hill.

Total walk-in is approx 1.6Km.

You will have to jump the stream.

The ground is always very soft and can be ankle deep mud at times.

It's also a bit smelly!

Restricted Access

Bird ban March to July. The reserve has requested no climbing in this sensitive area (and no cleaning of vegetation).

I've updated the details for this block including the GPS location which was incorrect. It's not in a climbable state at the moment but once lockdown lifts and the weather improves we might get back to it and do some work.
