Climbs 2
Rocktype Ice
Altitude 1020m a.s.l
Two multipitch ice climbs on the NW side of Escarpment Mountain can be seen from the highway. Good climbing with plenty of spots for rest. There are three couloirs that look enticing, but only two are worth any attention. These are the two closest together, Solar Flare and Soleil, and share the same approach.
From Carcross, head south down South Klondike way and at around 16km, Conrad Campground should be on your left. You can park here, or another few hundred metres down the road. From either point, walk or ski across the frozen lake for 20-30 minutes to the base of the slope. After this, 200m of elevation is gained on steep ground to the base of the icefalls. Note that the approach and the climbs are in avalanche terrain.
The ice on the approach lake forms in late December. Avalanches do occur down both climbs, so plan accordingly.
