Baou de Quatre Ouro © Rog Wilko

Crag features

Perhaps the best known of the Toulon cliffs, 'Baou' has a great selection of routes across the grades. There are plenty more hard offerings on the steep, shady cliffs above and right of the parking, great on hot summer days. Consult the local guide for more details.

The crag name roughly means "hill of the four winds" in Provençal, consequently this is not a place to head for when the Mistral is blowing. It faces almost due south and can be very hot.

Approach notes

The crag is north west of the centre of Toulon. The D46 runs north from the A50 and N8 towards Le Revest (and continues on round the back of Faron). A left-turn onto the D92 (Avenue André le Châtelier), 1.5 km north of the A50, is followed in 140m by a right-turn onto the D62 (Avenue Clovis Hugues). Follow this for 2km until, 160m after a roundabout, there is a left turn onto the 'Chemin du Baou de Quatre Heures' which starts winding up the hill. After 0.9km a discrete right turn (there are actually two if you miss the first one) accesses the road that runs (steeply) all the way up to the parking where it flattens out at a col. The cliff is ten minutes away and is reached by one of two paths depending which tier you are headed for.

Crag has under gone a Re-Bolting program many lower offs have been changed - the Routes are now LONGER. Notably in the UMMAGUMMA sector.
