Please refrain from climbing outside

Due to the ongoing spread of Covid-19, please abstain from climbing outside.

At UKC we are all climbers and we understand the strong urge to be outdoors as the weather is finally improving, but we feel this is no longer socially acceptable. You can read our statement here.

We have suspended the UKC Logbooks Top Ascents and Conditions pages and we will no longer accept ascents dated from 23rd March onwards. You can still upload your historic ascents.

βeta: Be sure to read the winter route description. There are a number of 'false traverses' off left. Don't traverse left until it gets really steep on the great tower.

John Kelly 21 Sep, 2019 Solo Lovely day, warm and dry, started from North face car park at 6, CIC for 7:30, top of ridge for 9, on to the summit then back to the car for 10:30. As usual managed to get lost a few times, 3 attempts to find the Eastern Traverse. A good day out tempered by the 13 hr round trip drive, who knew the Scots close the roads at night.

Still windy on the walk in but the ridge was nice and sheltered. Moved together for most of this, but pitched the eastern traverse and final top out (my leads). The traverse and top out (especially this!) were both pretty icy/snowy and I had to get the ice axe out. A bit terrifying as I hadn't encountered these conditions before but great day out! Pretty psyched to start some winter climbing next season!

humptydumpty 6 Sep, 2018 Solo O/S First time up Big Ben, by Tower Bridge, and then down the tourist track. 5:10 from N face carpark to youth hostel. Damp, swirling mists and forecasts of snow on the top from 1pm were an intimidating backdrop. Took me a while to find the way up the back of the DB, where the wet chimney was a scary start. All OK after that despite wet rock, although a committing, edgy move getting out of Tower Gap, which would have felt much more pleasant in rock boots. Passed a group of five on the way up, but didn't see anyone else until I reached the summit plateau.

Going up below the chockstoner etc. Was still snow on Ben Nevis. Iain did all the leading as we were running short on time. Left car at forestry commission car park ( we were lucky to bump into his mate who gave us key) at 0830 then arrived at CIC around 10, another 15 mins to Douglas boulder Direct. Coming back home from CUC hut took us more like an hour. But anyhow did get back to car til 2315!

Al_Mac 19 Sep, 2017 Lead Perfect autumn day. Took Steph for her first time on the Ben under the description of child minding. What better way to do your first Munro than by a route like Tower Ridge? Pitched a few bits when the runners ran out but mainly moved together, followed by a picnic to refuel her before doing tower gap. Topped out at 5pm and had the summit to ourselves apart from the Ravens and an utterly shameful amount of rubbish. Slightly slow on the return and chocolate related bribery was definitely required but a great wee day out.

No tat in place for tower gap as I had read but wasn't necessary- can easily place and retreive your own protection for this tricky bit.

JoeFoster59 14 Jun, 2016 Solo O/S Alpine start and alpine style. Hearing the weather was going to be great until 11am we decided to set off at 3am. Amazingly clear views all the way up to the CIC hut tempted by the douglas boulder but unsure of the weather we opted to skirt round to the right as Freddie had a recollection that it was a nicer way up. We decided we'd climb together so we all tied into the rope and set off. The right hand gully was awful every block was loose and every foothold wet delicately running up it we reached the start of tower ridge after a hellish hour up the chossy gully of imminent death. Still tied together we all soloed the initial climb realising that that was one of the hardest section we untied and proceed to solo the rest of the ridge. The freedom to choose your own line was amazing and with the weather still sunny and clear it was incredible all the way to tower gap. For the downclimb for tower gap we tied in and looped the rock around a boulder I then untied at bottom and had a astonishingly exposed climb out of the gap. Cindy then followed tied in. Freddie tempted by jumping tower gap but not ready to die for it got Cindy to loop the rope around a block on the other side and went for it on top rope. The rest of the scramble to the top was pleasant with a final dash to the summit we managed to top out by 8am 5 hours from the car to the summit. One of the greatest mountaineering experiences of my life all fueled by a Clif Bar and an energy gel. Next time Ill bring sarnies. Definitely the greatest scrambling I've ever experienced sickening exposure but with such good holds you almost always feel secure.
Alpine start and alpine style. From the second I laid eyes on it, I was magnetically drawn to it and knew there was no way I could leave without climbing it. The exposure of some of the sections on this route tested me mentally in many ways. If you decide to scramble it, make sure it's relatively dry out and you have chalk. There will be spots where you'll have 300+ ft drops of exposure and the only thing keeping you alive is solid positioning/holds and friction. Wouldn't recommend if you don't have a head for heights.

Marcus McLernon 3 Jul, 2015 AltLd Completed this straight after Douglas Boulder. Such a long day and we finished after midnight, topping out in the dark, strong winds and in the clouds for the last two hours. Nice route, most of it was Mod level so I was glad we did Douglas Boulder. We would have done it faster had we not traversed left way too early thinking we were on the eastern traverse when we went. This made things a little more interesting as the section we put ourselves on was VD level. Nice scramble route overall.

Hugh Simons 22 Jun, 2014 AltLd O/S Completed on the night of the summer solstice! After doing the Douglas Boulder Direct we continued on, enjoying the fantastic easy climbing. Soloed the majority, only pitching a few bits where we got lost thinking we had found the eastern traverse. Highlight has got to be the tunnel - just brilliant! Topped out just before 4.00am - shame the mist was in so we didn't get a view.

Cold wind which meant nippy fingers for a lot of the day, cloud was well established up top and the rock pretty rimed from Tower gap up. Pitched tower gap as it was a bit glazed. Will be back after winter for a proper solo, not what i'd call comparable to the big scrambles on Skye.

bowls 31 Aug, 2011 2nd Wet, damp rock, took us a long time. Traversed under the great tower from the Eastern Traverse and re-joined the ridge by the gap. Rock quality generally not as good as we would have expected. A long day made longer by carrying some 70 year old down the last stretch of the tourist path in the dark as his legs had gone!

Conan 14 May, 2011 Lead Was shocked to find continuous snow cover all the way from Douglas gap. About a foot deep in places. Certainly not winter nick though as it was quite slushy and no Ice at all. Very time consuming wiping away the snow off all the hand holds and footholds but only slightly slippier than normal wet conditions. Had to melt the snow off some of the handholds using my fingers which resulted in lots of hot aches. Well done to the girls for talking me in to taking them up. Great day!!!!

Byakkonick 23 Apr, 2011 AltLd The rock was damp so made the route interesting. My second ascent of the ridge (Done it in winter) and made the mistake of heading left on what I thought was the Eastern traverse too early! A common mistake I have been told. Climb up along the ridge until you reach a steep wall where you can't go any further, the Eastern traverse starts there. Couldn't see anything all day again! Oh well.

Adam N 16 Apr, 2011 Lead O/S shrouded in mist for the whole climb. short-roped with 2 pitches lead climbing under slippery conditions. eastern traverse (still under snow) and upper snow slopes were a bit dicy in approach shoes(should have at least brought an axe). at least 3 sizable avalanches and rockfalls in the surrounding gullies... shame we couldn't see them.
