Original Mossy Crack © IanMcC

Crag features

A small number of lower grade sport routes on an off-vertical conglomerate slab in an idyllic situation above Callander. The climbing is delicate and balancy on pebbles and pockets and belies first impressons. Still being developed, the odd loose pebble and mossy patch remain. Wear a helmet!

Approach notes

From the A84 in Callander, go north up the minor road signed " Bracklinn Falls and The Crags" for 500m to the Callander Crags car park.

Walk west 200m along the forestry road, then turn right up the hill onto the waymarked path.

Follow it quite steeply for 15 - 20 minutes until the escarpment is visible to the left.

Turn off the main path before the steps.

Follow a horizontal path leftward for 50 metres , then follow a smaller path on the right to the base of OMC Wall.

The area at the base of the crag is quite small.

Visited here today. Really pleasant venue for easy sport climbing. Friendly walk in, sunny aspect, nice bolting and slabby angles. Thoroughly recommend but would second the developer's comments about the need for a helmet at present.

We went back here just before lockdown happened and were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the climbing. Actually quite enjoyable as the holds are not that obvious and you have to think about it. If you're considering this crag in post-lockdown, be aware that the base of the crag is quite small and you would struggle to maintain 2m from another group if you were unlucky enough to 'double up' on the same trip.

Made a trip here to check it out but unfortunately by the time we arrived it was raining hard and no climbing was possible. There's no getting away from the fact that it's a single big slab of conglomerate with real features to speak of. Can't judge the climbing (yet) but it doesn't quite have the 'kerb appeal' of other places. Still it's an intermediate sport crag an hour from Glasgow so I'm REALLY not complaining. Hope to climb it soon. One small note - it's quite a steep climb up from the parking. Path is good but if you have 'spectators' tagging along you might want to check they are up for a bit of a workout!

Climbed here on Saturday 21st April - beautiful weather and the crag became a bit of a sun trap until the sun passed around in the early afternoon. Climbed both 5B's - The Cobbled Path and Original Mossy Crack. I would agree with the star ratings of the two climbs - OMC is certainly the better climb, however it felt significantly harder than TCP - both myself and my buddy agreed on this. This didn't detract in any way however and we had a great day in a beautiful setting on a great wee crag - all to ourselves!

Incredible the work that has gone into this, wire brushing the entire face to remove moss. Amazing job! The climbs are very enjoyable although inevitably a tad samey.

Good effort, fine sustained climbing and well bolted, in a great setting, sure to become popular
