Typical winter conditions in Cherry Hinton chalkpit, Cambridge © Richard J

Crag features

This is a disused chalk quarry - totally ideal for dry tooling! The main section of the quarry is between 20 and 70 feet high and there are a number of obvious lines. The rock is pretty loose and sane people would only want to top rope. There are good belays on trees and a fence at the top. [Daniel Jaeggi]

Principally used by Cambridge MC, as it's closer than Snowdon. No guidebook - nobody would be *that* anal... but there is an online description of various "routes" at http://www.cumc.uk.com/content/journal_85_cherryh

Some may have fallen down since then.

The quarry is almost unusable as of 05/02/11. Climbing is forbidden and the reserve is in awful condition with litter all over. [Jack K]

Approach notes

The quarry is now open to the public as a nature reserve managed by the Wildlife Trust, since Summer 2009. Access via a pedestrian gate to the NW.

The tops of the cliffs are so overgrown with brush that it is hard to find decent places to even toprope. [Dale Drake 7/06]

Also used as a mountain bike trail.

ok for top roping or abseiling though suspect one runs the risk of being kicked off as it is a nature reserve, but then so is Yosemite :-/

This area is soon to be turned in to a nature reserve. Act quick if you want to climb here. Gary

Guide to "routes" can now be found at: http://www.srcf.ucam.org/cumc/journals/85/CHERRYH.html rather than the link above.

Map link is incorrect. The Chalks pits are just on the outskirts of Cherry Hinton itself, not near Linton.
