Crag features

A tiny quick drying crag of excellent rock with good incut holds and natural protection which is ideal for beginners. The crag is situated in a lovely location with stunning views. There are some belay bolts in place on top of the crag.

Approach notes

Park at St John's in the Vale Church, which is signposted from the B5322, then cross a stile into the field to the north. The crag is visible about 200m away. Church Crag is divided into two small buttresses by a left slanting gully.

Actually we did all the first ascents there without bolt belays in perfect safety. The bolts were added later by the Calvert Trust with the permission of the land owner. They use it for taking disabled children climbing there and are the only outdoor ed group allowed to use the crag.

bolts totally necessary as there's 0 protection on top. ideal for beginners, plenty of parking, was a bit windy. only wanted morning climb and set up top rope and everyone got to climb. church were very unfriendly when someone(who wasn't well) used there loo.

Good beginners crag though it is not quick drying! In fact it suffers rather badly from seepage.. Also the totally unessasary bolts at the top totally ruin the atmosphere, why they are placed is beyond me there are a wealth of natural placements to build anchors on!!
