Crag features

Prepare yourself for some high-octane adventure at one of Calderdale's most secluded moorland secrets. A great venue with many excellent problems in the f4 to f7a range. The crag features a lone boulder 7m in height, which is actually in Lancashire, that hosts one of the best f6c problems around in Pinnacle ArĂȘte. In addition, the long edge contains hard arĂȘtes, a plethora of roof problems and some easy slabs on solid grit.

Dovestones is west-northwest facing and set in a beautiful position, overlooked by Boulsworth Hill, yet with an amazing view of Pendle Hill across Burnley town. The crag gets very little sun in mid-winter and is usually freezing; autumn and spring are best yet, due to its elevation and exposed nature, it can be a great option on windy (hot) summer days when most grit crags are out of condition. The rock can be a tad scrittly.

Approach notes

Park off the road by a rusty barrier, without blocking the farmer's access to his land. Walk up the obvious track (the 'Oil Road') northwest past a substantial barrier. After a mile, a large flat terminus is reached and the crag is clearly visible. It is untrod moorland from here (wellies recommended).

The crag lies on open access land but is a managed grouse shooting moor so respect any closures. These are shown on the gate at the start of the track to the crag.
