Crag features

The highest point in Iceland is a northwest peak on the rim of the Öræfajökull volcano.

The final climb up the peak of Hvannadalshnjúkur is an easy ice climb up rimed ice. Tremendous views from the peak over the Vatnajökull glacier stretching out of view to the north and over Skaftafjell to the west.

A good description is available in: Europe's High Points (Reaching the Highest Summit of Every Country in Europe).

Approach notes

A long day of mountaineering as ascent from 50m above sea level. Access via the track from the south of the Öræfajökull volcano leads up to a tongue of the glacier. A steep climb up the glacier, quite crevassed in places leads you up to the caldera rim. The caldera is completely ice filled and almost flat. The route continues straight across the caldera to the high point on the northwest rim.
