Laramade Bouldering © Chris Craggs
A worthwhile addition to the bouldering in the Ariège, with a good set of problems in a lovely setting. The accessibility of the venue is a bonus: the extensive boulderfield is set in a forest just seconds from the road. The rock is a rough, grippy granite, the area has been bouldered on for many years and there are several marked circuits. Many of the boulders were unearthed from thick vegetation. Local climbers undertake periodic re-cleaning to keep them in good condition but between times some may lose their appeal.
The boulders are in the trees, a plus in summer with shade on offer, and a minus in the winter when it can be a bit dank. The area gets the sun from mid-morning in summer.
From Tarascon-sur-Ariège, drive up the Niaux valley, to the village of Laramade (8km from the roundabout) and continue for another 1km to the village cemetery on the left, then round a left-hand bend to parking in a layby on the left, opposite a bridge (signed to Illier). The nearest boulders are 30 seconds away - go explore. More good boulders may be found 200m back down the road, opposite another obvious parking place and directly across the middle of the long field.
