Rockfax Description
This popular challenge is often used by local guides to teach Mountain Leader rope work. It is a short, pleasant scramble that can be done of an evening, or used as an alternative approach to a scramble on Clogwyn Du'r Addru. From the lay-by, walk through the gate by the 'helipad' and follow a path back right above the parking to cross a fence. Now head as direct as you can, picking your way through some large boulders and broken ground, towards the base of the prominent undulating ridge.
1) This rocky ridge is generally coarse and has a grippy sandstone-like feel. Initially you can climb up a series of grooves that head up just to the left of the blunt edge.
2) Pass one small shoulder then continue onto a much more prominent and exposed one.
3) The grade is dependent on whether you stick to the rib or deviate left into the gully. If you stick to the ridge then it is sustained grade 2. The scrambling is amazing and the difficulty soon eases - before you know it the dragon all but disappears into the hillside. It is easier in the gully.
Descent - Either continue on up to the top of the ridge and on to a scramble on Clogwyn Du'r Addru, or descend alongside the gully back to the car. © Rockfax
