The small compact granite area just beyond the railway line beyond the popular campsite by Eskdale Green, a few hundred metres above Diamond Crag and the bouldering area.
The FRCC guidebook classifies the collective of crags in this vicinity as 'Outward Bound Crags', known as 'Upper Diamond Crag' by some, and which corresponds with 'Fell End' on the OS map. This particular outcrop is 'Ranks Bank' (p. 214 of the 1996 edition).
There are no documented climbs as such, since the outcrop has been climbed for generations by Outward Bound instructors, so the lines below should give an idea of what is on offer.
Protection is sparse, and there is some polish, but solid bolt belays can be found at the top.
Access as for Diamond Crag and Fisherground boulder area, but keep walking uphill and through the dry stone wall.
It's easiest to access the crag from the left (as you face the crag) as there's a path that comes round to it from that side.
The crag is the clean slab that can be seen near the top of the hill, just below Fell End. Path up through ferns not particularly distinct in August 2015. FrJ - 07/Sep/15 |
