Fletch and Jacques, The Tourist Route, The Suckstone, Near Hearkening Rock © Ander

Crag features

A beautiful setting, possibly worth it for the ten minute walk-in alone. And if it's not worth it for that, surely getting a line on the UK's largest boulder has to tick someone's box.

It's not as hard to find as the Indy make out-

On the road from Coleford to Monmouth, a few hundred meters after passing through the village of Staunton, where the double white line in the centre of the road ends, turn into a forestry track on the right. Plenty of room for parking.

Walk past the green metal barrier, take the right hand fork and atfter 10 mins the crags are in the woods on the right.

A final word- it's probably wise to take a nylon brush on any visit. With the low level of traffic- good thing- moss can accumulate- bad thing. You don't want that walk-in wasted, do you?

Approach notes

Forestry Commission land. Open access.

Green on North and East sides. East face will need a proper clean to get the most out of the high balls but on a dry day they are still climbable.

The suckstone is looking very green and mossy at present :-( (march 2015)

Note on the route in mentioned, the crag is a mile and a half from the road - if anyone else is planning to take their kids there, please bear in mind and adjust the approach time accordingly. Lovely walk though x

Given this a bit of a clean, most of the East face routes are now climbable. Great evening fun... better than the wall!

Visited today. East face could do with a brushing down. May well return to do just that...
Ander - 10/Sep/11
Visited Nov-09, surprise surprise after this crappy summer/autumn it was utterly covered in moss. Only managed one route (a function of the moss, my stupid lack of a brush for cleaning and my fairly feeble arms...)
