Updates FAQ

Where do I start?

View our tutorial on how to start creating updates.

What can I use this system for?

The updates and corrections system allows users to report corrections in printed or digital guides, and submit topos for new routes and boulder problems that are not fully covered anywhere else.

What can I not use this system for?

Creating topos for crags that are well covered by easily accessible information, in print or digital. This applies to all areas and not just ones covered by Rockfax. The update system is not intended as a free topo supply and submissions will not be made public if that is felt to be the case.

I have found information that is well covered by another source?

If you find topos for updates on UKC Logbooks that you think are covered well by alternative information, then please contact us.

My updated information has disappeared - where did it go?

We may remove topos if we find alternative similar information. It could also be that a new guidebook has appeared which makes the correction or new information redundant since it is now properly covered elsewhere.

Advanced tips for creating an update

The route/problem doesn't appear on the Create Update page when I click +Add Route?

Only routes which have been added to the correct buttress and crag in UKC Logbooks can be added. First, ensure that all the routes you want to add to the topo are properly listed on UKC Logbooks. This may need you to contact the crag moderator. We can also add you as a second moderator if required.

Buttresses - how do they relate to an update?

Routes/problems may not appear on the Create Update page if the buttress isn't set up correctly on UKC Logbooks. A buttress on UKC Logbook contains all the climbs listed under it as far as the next buttress on a specific crag. Each update can only belong to one buttress (although a buttress can have more than one topo). On some crags on UKC Logbooks extra buttresses, or smaller sub-divider buttresses, have been added. These need to be removed before a topo can be created and that may need you to contact the crag moderator.

The routes/problems share a section - how do I deal with this?

Where a route splits from another route, draw the independent section and move the label (route number) onto that section. With more complex lines, or link-ups with no independent climbing, draw the full new line as close as possible on top of the existing lines. It will be given different dots in the finished topo and highlight correctly when selected.

How do I make my lines look different to avoid confusion with overlapping routes?

Route lines that intersect are given a different pattern of dots. To do this automatically the must routes overlap at least one point on the Create Update page.

Two routes start in the same place - how do I avoid the numbers being on top of each other?

Where routes start in the same place, split the line at the start of the route with a short section creating an inverted Y shape to keep the labels apart.

The route has a variation - how do I mark it?

Currently, the only way to do this is to enter the variation in UKC Logbooks as a separate route and then draw the route line for that variation.
