McClure completes Malham project

The extension to Raindogs, at Malham was originally a project of Mark Leach's back in the early '90s.

On Wednesday this week, Steve McClure managed to redpoint it after 22 days effort over 2 years. McClure found the route to be of similar difficulty to his own 'Northern Lights' at Kilnsey, although the crimpy nature of that route suited him more than the burly bicep moves on the Malham project. The climb involves doing Raindogs (without grabbing the belay chain of course), 8a+ in itself, then a Font 7c+ boulder problem, follwed by another 8a+/8b on top. It finishes at a no-hands rest, avoiding what would be a loose 7a+ finish to the half height ledge.

Steve completed the project at the final hour, as he is leaving for a month's climbing in Greenland next week and had either Wednesday or Saturday to link the route. The grade "Probably 9a".

Top effort by Steve. I think that makes 2 at Malham (if you include Total Eclipse) and Northern Lights, Kilnsey. Is that 6 in the country now then? Andy F
