GB Ice Climbing Team member Anna Wells finished a very respectable 11th place at the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup in Saas Fee, Switzerland last weekend at one of the toughest rounds on the World Cup circuit.

Having missed the first rounds of the series in the USA and Korea due to university commitments, Anna was keen to test her British Tooling series, Buxton Thunderdome and Dutch Drytool Event success on the world circuit, having won every competition she entered in the 2014 competition season.

Anna qualified for the semi-finals in 14th place after a strong performance on the qualifying route and bettered this result in the semi-final, finishing 11th overall.

Anna told us:

"The last few days have been a blur of excitement, nerves and exhaustion! The Saas Fee World Cup has a reputation for being the biggest and best of all the rounds, set in an 11 storey car park with a DJ blaring music all weekend - surreal! The routes were technical and suited me well and I couldn't believe it when I qualified for semis in 14th place.

"I absolutely loved climbing in the semis, the atmosphere was buzzing and the route was so much fun! I gave it everything I had, finding all the moves OK but running out of energy too soon. In the end, I moved up to 11th place, I was over the moon! There is nothing better than seeing the results of training pay off. Also, a massive well done must go to everyone else on the team, for some of whom it was their first international event."

The highest placed GB male was Harry Holmes in 35th (/59). Over the next month the GB Ice Climbing Team will compete in three more World Cup competitions in Italy, France and Russia.
