New UKC Tokyo 2020 Olympic Athlete Database

With one year to go until the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (once again), we're launching our new site feature showcasing the selected climbers. On 4-7 August 2020, Sport Climbing was due to make its Olympic debut. In a historic move, the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in postponement of the event until 3-6 August 2021, resulting in mixed emotions for both confirmed athletes and those still fighting for a place.

In these interactive 'sports card' style profiles, you'll find competition stats and action shots alongside bios and analysis written by IFSC Commentator Charlie Boscoe and UKC Editor Natalie Berry, with some predictions and trivia thrown in for good measure.

32 athletes have been confirmed so far, while eight places remain due to the ongoing disruption to the qualification pathway. The climbers can be sorted by seed*, Speed PB or Boulder and Lead results to see how they measure up against one another in each discipline.

We hope that this permament site feature will become a reference point for information on the athletes of the Tokyo Games as well as those competing in Paris 2024 and beyond. UKC's official press accreditation for the Tokyo 2020 Games will roll over to 2021.

With thanks to Paul Phillips for the design, Charlie for his written contributions, Eddie Fowke of The Circuit Climbing for the provision of photos, Tim Leong for sharing the collated data on his webpage and Tim Hatch for verifying Speed PBs.

*Only the first eight athletes are currently seeded. Seed list TBC.

The page can otherwise be accessed via the homepage 'News' menu and selecting 'Olympics'.

We need your help.

UKClimbing is a vibrant web site with rich content and an amazing community. So far, all we've asked of you is that you visit and interact with the site but we are in uncertain times. We need to look at ways to keep the site moving forward whilst maintaining our key aim of allowing free access to everyone to our main content. The site will continue to be mainly funded by a subtle level of outdoor-only advertising but we now need extra support to ensure we can continue to provide the UKC that we all know and love.

You can help us by becoming a UKC Supporter. This can be in a small way or in a larger package that includes discounted products from our sister-publishing company Rockfax.

If you appreciate UKClimbing then please help us by becoming a UKC Supporter.
