If you are looking for a one stop shop full of amazing gear and helpful staff then head over to Stony Stratford where not only can you get everything you need for walking, climbing, mountaineering, expeditions and ultra distance running but there is a great selection of specialist independent shops catering for all that other stuff we need to survive the downtime in between adventures.

We have two floors packed with the very best choice of footwear, rucksacks, clothing, stoves, sleeping bags, tents, accessories, lighting and climbing gear so whether you are starting out on your first D of E training expedition, planning a charity trek to somewhere far flung or heading out to the greater ranges for a first ascent you can shop with us in the confidence that we have the knowledge and experience to help you make the right choice of gear for your needs. In fact – we’ll probably be as excited as you are! Why? Because way back in 1959 The Climbers Shop was the very first outdoor equipment shop to open in Ambleside, The Lake District, when the founder, Frank Davis, decided to open a specialist shop to sell the walking and mountaineering gear he needed for his own expeditions.

Address: 27-31 High Street, Stony Stratford, Milton Keynes, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE MK1 1AA
Telephone No: 01908 565863
Opening Hours: Monday - Sat 9.30am - 6pm / Sunday - Closed

For over half a century customers have been welcomed with the very best choice of outdoor equipment, a keen interest in the activities they love and most importantly, good advice tailored to their specific needs – those increasingly rare shopping experiences that we all have misty memories of. Our brilliant staff team help us stay true to our roots by using their time, knowledge and passion for their chosen sport to offer advice and service way beyond that of just a financial transaction. In fact, loads of our customers come in and then leave without buying anything at all! They simply just pop in for a chat about what they’ve been up to.

So why on earth is a Lake District icon opening down south? Well, ironically, Milton Keynes was key to the current owners’ involvement in rock climbing and mountaineering. Both Directors Paul and Cathy Casey grew up in the city and started out on backpacking trips to the Peak District with schools and D of E before moving on to climbing trips across the UK and later, expeditions to the Alps, North America and the Himalaya. But the link to our new shop goes even deeper. In fact, the very building that The Climbers Shop is based in is on Stony Stratford High Street and used to be the home of the famous Outdoor Shop. Where in 1992 (and this is where the less romantic among you may want to throw up) they met.

I wish them well. I have always had good service and solid no-nonsense advice from the staff in Ambleside.

I should declare an interest here. I was at School with Paul. Infact I think we were both left for a week in a remote Himalayan village as we both had feet too rubbish to go trekking (frostbite and infected heel). My parents are still in Stony Stratford and I know that the town is pleased to site occupied again I popped in the first day that they opened to say hi to Catherine and Paul. I also need Rock shoes for 3 teenagers so we shopped for those at the same time. Great service and advice. All the best for the future.

Hi Paul, Cathy This took me back. Remember you both well from the early nineties when I lived in MK and bought all my kit from the Stoney shop ... when it was owned by John? Great to see you looking well and still climbing. Will try and pop in next time I'm down visiting my parents (living in Leeds now). Rich

So what has happened to the Outdoor Shop? Is it still around? Never been there but used to buy bits from regularly over the internet.

The business was sold. The new owner moved to a new shop. The receivers were called in and then eventually it ceased trading
