World's first Grade VII gets second ascent - after 25 years

The Charlie Porter Route, put up solo by the man himself in 1975 on Mt Asgard, Baffin Island, has finally had its first successful repeat. Cedar Wright and Jason "Singer" Smith became the first people to make the ascent of the VII, 5.10+ A4 route.

First established over nine days by Porter, who was a gifted soloist, the line was described by Doug Scott as "the greatest achievement in Baffin, the Arctic and probably anywhere."

It's no pushover - if you're looking to be the third up, bear in mind that Wright and Smith took 38 hours to complete the route, in a 54-hour stretch from leaving their base camp to returning to it.
