Slovenians Climb Lake District Birkett E8

A band of merry climbers, Klemen Premrl (Slovenia), Stefano Staffetta (Italy), Igor Zerjal (Slovenia) and Erik Svab (Slovenian-Italian), after seeing the Posing Productions film, Set In Stone about Dave Birkett, and being bored to death by me about how good the Lakes is for climbing whilst at the BMC Winter meet, decided to head west to the English Lake District over the weekend of the 2nd June.

They were very lucky with the weather only getting caught in the rain on the first route of their long weekend. An afternoon at Raven crag, Langdale, gave them a nice warm up; Trilogy (E5), Pluto (HVS) and Muscle Crack (E1) providing suitable sport between the thunder showers.

Dave Birkett did a great job of showing the visitors around his kingdom on the Friday and Saturday with trips to the East Buttress of Scafell and Borrowdale, with a late night at the Wasdale Head and a visit to “probably the best café in the world” at Shepherds, mixed in with some impressive climbing, although the walk in to East Buttress didn't go down too well.

The last climbing day saw Erik and Steffano climb Dawes Rides a Shovel Head E8 6c, with Clem and Igor doing Trilogy E5 6a, then after a quick pint in the Old Dungeon Ghyll there was just time to dispatch a few classic problems at Langdale Boulders. (See this photo, Langdale boulders under Siege click here)

Dave now has a new fan base in the Slovenian climbing fraternity. Not a bad weekend.

Yeah I think we were there the same day as these lads, spoke to the Italian guy at the top of the crag. They were cranking, working the route during the afternoon and he sent it later in the day (he said he pre placed all the kit though)! Good effort still!
