Huge New Bouldering Wall for Newcastle

© Climb Newcastle
Dedicated bouldering centre Climb Newcastle will be unveiled this Thursday 23rd October in Byker, just outside of Newcastle City Centre. The quarter of a million pound development is the vision of former British Champion and World Cup winner Andy Earl, and well known climbers in the regional and national scene, Chris Graham and Darren Stevenson.

The Climb Newcastle team have transformed a derelict swimming pool into the city's first dedicated climbing centre. The fascinating 3 floor building has been neglected since the swimming pool closed in 1991. Whilst developing the climbing centre they have also brought the building back into condition making it watertight and restoring its services, with many local residents expressing their excitement that the building will be put to good use once again.

The centre promises to be one of the finest of its kind in the world, offering extensive facilities for everyone from beginners and children to international athletes, and backed up with a comprehensive coaching structure written and overseen by Andy Earl.

Chris Graham offers some insight into the various rooms in the centre as the final pieces of the plywood puzzle are put together:

"Our coaching room is perfect for kids and those getting started, not too high and with 6 different angles to play with there will be plenty of variety in style and difficulty in here alone. Down in the main climbing arena our expert wall builders Andy Long and Robert Lamey took no time getting stuck in. The idea in here is that there will be several coloured circuits of problems; you simply pick the colour that matches your desired level and off you go. The great thing is that the sheer size of this area means that there will be a stack of problems to do whatever your ability."

And only 50 yards from the Metro station, it couldn't really be much better placed.

If the pool was 25m then the main area will be 6 x 25m @ near 5m high so roughly 750 square metres of bouldering surface, plus two other rooms/floors. The excellent colour coded problems and circuits make a great contrast to the existing wall in Eldon Leisure. The wall is really good with lots to go at, right across the grade ranges. Check it out.

I was there last night and ended up staying for well over 3 hours. I'm loving the circuit style of grading the problems & routes. There seems to be plenty of space for more routes too. (maybe some traverses, please?)
