Coaches just wanna have FUNdamentals
There's still time to sign up for the BMC FUNdamentals of Climbing workshops taking place around the country this autumn. The workshops provide climbing coaches with the opportunity to further their skills and are designed for anyone who coaches climbing, especially those coaching young people.
The workshops will be delivered by Neil Johnson (IFMGA Mountain Guide) and will be visiting Manchester, Bristol, Guildford, Kendal, Nottingham and Newcastle.
The day focuses on basic coaching technique, good practice and ways to teach climbing movement. There's also an introduction to the long-term athlete development model. Taking part in a workshop is a clear way to demonstrate Continuing Professional Development (CDP). Course members receive a certificate of attendance as well as an information pack.
Neil says “In my experience the day is always well received. The attendees often come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences – anything from a British Mountain Guide to a non-climbing parent who wants to ensure their child is getting the right information from the start. This makes for a great platform to exchange ideas and experiences from the diverse world of the modern climbing environment. The workshops take place at indoor walls but there's plenty of opportunity to discuss how to adapt all the techniques to the outdoor environment.”
BMC Fundamentals workshops have been running for about six years and have been delivered by Neil Johnson, Katherine Schirrmacher, Ian Dunn & Dave Binney. The content is continuously developed to fit the needs of the wide variety of people who coach climbing. The workshop draws on the findings of academic research, and the knowledge and experience of many climbing coaches.
