Swiss climber Dani Arnold has set a new speed record on the North Face of the Matterhorn with a time of 1 hour and 46 minutes, beating Ueli Steck's previous record by ten minutes. Dani climbed the face via the classic Schmid Route.

The 30 year-old has made a name for himself with impressive achievements in mixed and ice climbing. In 2013, he set a new speed record for climbing the North Face of the Eiger with a time of 2 hours and 28 minutes - although he made use of the fixed ropes on the Hinterstoiser Traverse, unlike previous record-holder Ueli Steck.

This year, Zermatt is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn by British alpinist Edward Whymper in 1865.

Ueli Steck also held the previous Matterhorn speed record, with a time of 1 hour and 56 minutes.
