In a major rescue this afternoon two casualties were recovered from Creag Meagaidh following an avalanche. One member of the party has died and the other remains in a serious condition.

Inspector Donald Campbell said:

"Police Scotland would like to thank all rescue personnel involved in today's rescue for the rapid response and determination displayed in very challenging conditions. Sadly, one man succumbed to his injuries and his climbing companion remains in hospital."

And in the Southern Uplands a party of three hillwalkers were located this afternoon in the open after having been missing overnight north of Thornhill in very difficult weather conditions that hampered the search.

The men, described by police as "experienced hillwalkers familiar with the area" were airlifted to hospital, where one of the party was pronounced dead. The other two are being treated for hypothermia.

  • Meanwhile climbers Rachel Slater and Tim Newton are still missing on Ben Nevis after a climbing trip at the weekend. Police are appealing for information from anyone who might have seen them (call Police Scotland on 101 and ask for Fort William police).

Update - Mid day 18/02/16: It has been announced that a second member of the party of three in the Lowther hills incident has died in hospital. The two fatalities have been named as Geoffrey Stewart, 74, and George Crosbie, 73. Their companion Bobby Thomson remains in hospital.

All very sad, and at the same time as the whole outdoor community is hoping against hope for good news from Nevis. Thoughts with all who have lost loved ones, or whose loved ones are missing, at this time.
