According to a report on The Himalayan times website, Swiss Alpinist Ueli Steck - known as the 'Swiss Machine' - has died in an accident on Mount Everest. His body was discovered by six rescuers near the Nuptse Face of Everest on Sunday morning local time.
Steck was in the area with the objective of climbing the unrepeated West Ridge/Hornbein Couloir route without the use of supplementary oxygen. According to his Facebook Page, Steck had been acclimatising in the days prior to the accident.
In a report on Reuters, Kamal Prasad Parajuli, an official with Nepal's Department of Tourism, confirmed that Steck died while climbing Nuptse.
He said Steck "slipped and fell 1000 metres" in the Western Cwm, near Camp Two.
The 40 year-old held numerous speed records, notably the North Face trilogy in the Alps.
