Nepal opens up 50 new peaks

The Nepalese Government have opened up 50 new peaks for climbing as part of the Everest Golden Jubilee Celebration. The highest of these is Kabra (7318m) in the Kanchenjunga range. Out of the total 50 peaks, 23 peaks are of below 6,500 meter for which no liaison officer is required. With the newly opened peaks, the total number of mountain peaks that are opened for climbing in Nepal has reached 326. 125 have now been opended up in the last two years. The Nepalese ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviaition hopes that more peaks will mean more visitors are attracted to Nepal and mountain tourism developed further. There is no indication as to the attractiveness of these newly opened mountains for climbing or the method in which they are identified as suitable objectives.
