Altus Opening Party

© Mark Kemball
The bouldering section of the new Altus wall opened on 12th May. About 50 climbers turned up to join Malcolm Smith sampling the problems on this huge free standing boulder. The problems were set to Simon Young's usual high standard, and the structure itself is unique and is worth viewing as a sculpture, quite apart from the climbing. A very convivial afternoon's climbing was rounded off nicely with beers and a barbeque. For the next few weeks, the opening times are going to be limited as construction moves on to the lead and top-roping walls. It's best to contact Simon Young before visiting - www.barn-climbing.co.uk.

Is there anything else there other than that boulder?

Hell yeah. Not fully operational yet but this place is going to be awesome with the boulder taking centre stage and climbs of all natures around the walls. Keep your eye on it because it is set to be a bit special. We all know how much of himself Simon put into The Barn at Bude, this place is going to be an evolution of that theme with Simon taking what he learned and applying it to the new project.

I went to the 'opening'. Met Mark there (hello) and Simon, co founder/owner (i guess). There is a massive ammount of commitment and energy going into that place. If first impressions are anything to go by, its going to be a brilliant climbing venue. Best of luck with 'Altus', hope to be back down that way in a few month and look forward to seeing the place fully functional and busy with boulderers.

Excellent - what hours is it open at the mo?
14 May, 2007
At the moment, only weekday evenings as far as I know. To be sure it is open, contact Simon on 07807 593127. Basically he's got such a lot of work to do on the place, and can't really get on with it while the wall is open to the public.
