Major Phil Packer has started his attempt at El Cap accompanied by Andy Kirkpatrick, Paul Tattersall, Ian Parnell and Ben Pritchard.

Packer is a paraplegic who suffered a spinal injury whilst serving his country on operations in Iraq in February 2008. He has since gone on to complete various adventure challenges in order to raise money for the charity Help for Heroes.

His ascent of El Cap has been described as "the equivalent of 4,254 pull ups".
