MacLeod and Emmett's Great Climb On BBC iPlayer

© Dave MacLeod collection
Dave MacLeod and Tim Emmett successfully climbed a new route on Sron Uladail, Harris on Saturday that was broadcast live on BBC Scotland and Sky channel 990.

Despite rain, wet rock and Dave's injured ankle, the pair successfully completed the very steep five pitch route now known as, The Usual Suspects E9 7a.

If you missed the broadcast of The Great Climb you can watch the whole show on the BBC iPlayer until September 4th.

The 5+ hour broadcast made great TV.

Mick Johnston, an experienced climber of 30 years told us that it was the best climbing film he had ever watched. So inspired was Mick that on Sunday he went out and climbed an E6 at a new quarry near Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire.

The UKClimbing.com forums were abuzz with comment and commentary as the climb progressed.

"Jesus, I'm knackered just watching it! Dave looks utterly wiped out, what a fantastic effort, especially considering he's got a banged up ankle." (Toby S)

"Fab program - amazing climbing, watched a couple of hours at the end on the live stream yesterday and the rest on iplayer today. I was amazed at how glued I was to it, climbing can be a spectator sport." (SharonC1604)

"What a brilliant effort: I also thought the "Cult'ya" bits quite appropiate; the Western isles are stunning and were the weather any better I don't imagine anyone would bother going to the Carribean for their hols." (chickenman)

"I though the commentary was about right, did not over egg most of the time it too much and explained things for a non-climbing audience reasonably well." (New NickB)

"Congrats to both climbers. Fantastic climb.
And a big thanks to all those who turned a great climb into great tele: the riggers, camera men, sound guys, presenters, those that made the cocoa... hats off to you all."
(almost sane)

You can read Dave MacLeod's comments about the day at his blog.

A big thanks to Dave and Tim, Triple Echo Productions, Executive Producers Richard Else and David Harron, and the team of 55, many of them climbers, who made the broadcast happen.

The Great Climb will be available on DVD soon along with Triple 5, the film of Dave and Tim climbing five new routes on five Scottish islands.
