Although this year's Melloblocco was plagued by rather miserable weather most of the time, it was still a success with 2200 registered participants and great parties.
Melloblocco is most and foremost about meeting boulderers from all over the world, climbing, hanging out and partying together.
This year, there was less of the first and more of the latter two activities.
As the first day was sunny, and the forecast looked grim, this day was all about getting as much climbing done as possible.
The remaining three days were less about climbing, at least on rock, though Alexey Rubtsov managed to turn it on on day four despite of the first element being against him and did a very wet and almost heroic ascent of Ombre Multidimensionali, thereby joining Anthony Gullsten and Michele Caminati as winner of the competition. They all did three of the bounty problems.
The competition formula is rather simple: There are 9 bounty- or money problems. Everyone who climbs one of these gets a share of the money. If you're the only one to do it, you get all the money.
Among the women, Shauna Coxsey, who did 5 problems, won ahead of Barbara Zangerl, Ekaterina Andreeva and Olga Iakovleva, who all did 4.
This spring has truly been a breakthrough for the 19 year old from Liverpool, winning invitationals and consistently placing in the top-4 in the World Cups. If she keeps this momentum up, and betting against that would be a bad idea, you will hear more about her soon. 18-19 May she is competing in the Innsbruck World Cup.
So, even if everyone attending Melloblocco enjoyed it... let's hope for even better weather for the 10th anniversary next year!
