Scottish climber dies in 2000ft fall in Canada

© Neil Mackenzie

Scottish climber and UKC contributor Neil Mackenzie has died in a 2,000ft fall whilst ice climbing in Pemberton, British Columbia, alongside two female climbers.

The climbers are thought to have fallen more than 600m down a couloir where their bodies were discovered within 40m of each other, after attempting to climb Joffre Peak and nearing its summit.

Neil was a member of the University of British Columbia Outdoors Club and a keen climber, having travelled to climb and ski-tour in Scotland, the Canadian Rockies, European Alps and Alaska. He had been living in Vancouver after moving there from Scotland.

Our thoughts are with Neil's family and friends at this difficult time.

Neil contributed articles and photos to UKC - read his article on splitboarding here.
