El Cap in Google Street View!Fri Night Vid

© Google

This week's Friday Nighter is more than a video! It is a Google Streetview / Map of El Capitan! Featuring Alex Honnold, Tommy Caldwell and Lynn Hill, this feature is really cool, you can literally scroll up and down the cliff. Amazing.

If you haven't seen it already then check it out below, and the Youtube video that goes with it.

Nice work Google - and we are looking forward to the next one - Mont Blanc with Ueli Steck and crew!

Well that is quite neat - I even managed to pick up some virtual crag swag...

Interesting. So that so called street view image appears to be no more than just a simple panorama shot wrapped round a scrollable, spherical 3D object. Or is there more to it than that? I'm guessing Google had nothing to do with taking the actual photos?

There seem to be only a handful of images in the 'street view' embedded in the UKC article. You can get a proper street view of the entire route if you go to; https://www.google.com/maps/@37.729695,-119.63677,3a,75y,294.42h,12.65t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1seWxBfFZek38AAAQo8ByvQw!2e0!3e2!7i12000!8i6000 The link was half way down the google blog post under 'climb the entire route' but I haven't found it anywhere else. http://googleblog.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/vertical-street-view-of-worlds-most.html

I agree, its very odd, even the 'climb the entire route' link'. I kept seeing the climber in red (in different places) and couldn't see how to get 'down' past him to get lower on the climb. I could face out but trying to move up or down to a certain place just seemed pot luck. Nice idea but unless I am missing something it just doesn't work. Shame as I was hoping to use it to get some useful info on the details of the climb by way of preparation.
